There are many reasons why a woman might decide to undergo plastic surgery on her breasts. Perhaps she would like to enlarge or reduce the size of her breasts. Another woman may be simply looking to finally obtain symmetry in the size or shape of her breasts. Finally, many women chose to undergo reconstruction of one or both breasts after cancer surgery.

Breast Augmentation

One of the most commonly seen benefits of breast enlargement is an improved self-confidence. Perhaps this is due to the enhancement of the woman’s appearance. It may be a result of finally being able to fit properly into the clothing which she would like to wear. In some cases a woman may regain her voluptuous figure, even out developmental asymmetries, or enhance the volume which she lost with age or pregnancy. Regardless of the motivation, many women are choosing to undergo breast enlargement and are making it one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States.

The surgery for breast augmentation requires inserting an implant (silicone gel or saline) through a small incision and positioning it either behind the chest muscle or beneath the breast tissue itself. The actual approach and placement of the implant is customized according to each woman’s skin, the amount of native breast tissue, her desired results, the presence of any developmental anomalies, and other individual characteristics. If needed, a breast lift can be performed at the same time to enhance the final result.

Breast Lift (mastopexy)

As we all eventually discover, gravity and age can have a dramatic effect on our bodies. With the loss of elasticity and gravity pulling downward, a woman’s breasts can begin to droop or sag. Breasts can also lose their youthful shape and firmness from pregnancy and nursing. A breast lift or Mastopexy lifts and reshapes the breast and can reduce the size of the areola. If desired, implants can be inserted at the same time to further enhance the volume and shape.

Breast Reduction

Do you find yourself feeling self-conscious and usually wearing large, baggy clothes? Are you tired of having difficulty finding a bra, shirt, or dress which fits properly. If your answered, “yes” to any of these questions, you may be one of the many women suffering from very large, pendulous breasts. Perhaps you are constantly suffering with back, neck, and shoulder pain. Are you frequently replacing your bras? Do you wear two bras at the same time in order to achieve the necessary support? Do you have difficulty exercising, working, or participating in some activities due to the size of your breasts? If this describes you, you may want to consider a breast reduction.

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure which lifts and decreases the size of the breasts. The amount of breast tissue and skin removed is tailored to each individual such that the resultant breasts are in better proportion to the remainder of the body. Although breast reduction surgery is usually performed to relieve physical symptoms such as pain and rashes, it can improve self-esteem and self-confidence in some individuals.

Breast Reconstruction

After the unfortunate removal of her breast for cancer, many women are choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery to reconstruct the breast. Although a reconstructed breast is not exactly like a native breast, modern techniques facilitate the creation of a much more natural looking and feeling breast. Depending on the situation, the reconstructive process can begin at the time of the mastectomy surgery or at a later time. Breasts can be reconstructed using a woman’s own tissue to recreate the breast mound or using implants beneath her tissue. The surgery is customized for each person depending on her situation and her desires.

Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia, enlarged male breasts, is not an uncommon condition. The surgical treatment of gynecomastia involves the removal of fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. In some cases where there is a significant amount of excess skin, the excess skin must be excised as well. The result of surgery for enlarged male breasts is a contoured chest which is flatter and firmer. Many men, who feel self-conscious about their appearance prior to the surgery, have an enhanced self-esteem after the procedure.

Breast Implant Removal

Regardless of the specific reasons, some women who have had breast implants may choose to have one or both of the implants removed. Depending on the size of the implant being removed, many individuals will require a breast lift to tighten and reshape the breast after removal of the implant.
